st & 2nd Timothy: Letters to a Son

November

The apostle Paul's two letters to Timothy, together with his letter to Titus, are often called the Pastoral Epistles. This is appropriate, in one sense, because these letters were written to young pastors who were involved in the leadership of churches. They constitute, therefore, a kind of handbook for pastors. But I prefer to call the letters the Filials rather than the Pastorals, because filial has to do with sonship, and that is what Timothy and Titus were--sons in the faith of the apostle Paul. He had led them both to Christ. They were very dear to him, and they had shared many hardships with him on his journeys throughout the Roman Empire.

In this first letter to Timothy (whom he had left at the church at Ephesus), Paul is giving him counsel and guidance on how to conduct himself in the leadership of that church. Scholars have had difficulty identifying the timing of the writing of these letters to Timothy. Nothing that Paul refers to in them fits into the history recorded in the book of Acts. Some, therefore, have doubted that Paul even wrote them. Most scholars are now agreed, however, that these are the last letters to come from Paul's hand.

The book of Acts closes with Paul imprisoned in a hired house in Rome, where he stayed for two years. Luke suggests that Paul was released from there, and many scholars feel that after his release from that first imprisonment, Paul traveled with Timothy and Titus around the Roman Empire before going to the East again. He left Titus on the island of Crete to guide the emerging church there, and he brought Timothy on to Ephesus with him where there already was a church that had been long established. The apostle then left Timothy in Ephesus while he himself traveled on up to Macedonia.

Many think that Paul went from there to Spain, and perhaps even to Britain. At any rate, after the apostle had left Timothy, he was subsequently arrested and re-imprisoned in Rome, this time very likely in the Mamertine Prison. In that cold, dark hole, the apostle wrote the second letter to Timothy. Shortly thereafter, as far as tradition tells us, Paul was beheaded on the Ostian Way, outside Rome. These letters, therefore, come from the close of the apostle's ministry. They were written to someone who was very dear to Paul's heart, who was very closely involved with him in the ministry. These are beautiful letters from a father to a beloved son who is undertaking a demanding and dangerous work.

This introduction was inspired by one of Ray's sermons. Please read "1 Timothy: Pastor's Primer" (or listen to the audio file  Listen to Ray) for more on this portion of scripture.

Daily Devotions for the Month of November

st Guard The Teaching (1 Timothy 1:1-7) — The definition of genuine love in no way resembles the meaningless street versions. Genuine love has three basic components, well worth noting and memorizing.

nd Using The Law Lawfully (1 Timothy 1:8-11) — The Ten Commandments give us insight into who God is. Christ's love provides us with the motivation and the power to fulfill them. Do our lives reflect God's character?

rd Chief Of Sinners (1 Timothy 1:12-17) — We have met the enemy and he is us! The wonder is that Christ died for His enemies. Confession makes us eligible for His redeeming grace and forgiveness.

th Wage The Good Warfare (1 Timothy 1:18-20) — A comfort-loving self is not the Christian's calling. When the going gets tough, do we opt for self indulgence, or do we choose to face life's challenges realistically?

th The First Thing: Prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-7) — Prayer is the acknowledgement of the character and Presence of God. What priority does this life-changing encounter with God have in our day-to-day lives?

th How To Pray (1 Timothy 2:8-15) — Talking to our awesome God is not a casual encounter. Does our public prayer reflect personal integrity as we see ourselves in the presence of God's holiness?

th A Noble Task (1 Timothy 3:1-7) — With Christ at the helm, leadership can steer a noble course in every context. Are we earnestly praying for our leaders to follow Christ with integrity?

th The Lord's Servants (1 Timothy 3:8-13) — Are we serving others for Christ's sake, or for our own self-seeking agenda? Do we continually seek the power and wisdom of His indwelling life?

th God's Chosen Instrument (1 Timothy 3:14-15) — When the church fails to lovingly speak truth to bring light, the foundations of society crumble. Do our lives illumine the life of Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life?

th God's Mysteries (1 Timothy 3:16) — We all long to be an 'all together' person. When we feel locked in to our brokenness, where do we go to find the keys to wholeness?

th Fraudulent Faith (1 Timothy 4:1-5) — What is the difference between self-denial and denying self? Are we careful not to let subtle religious error lead us into a fraudulent faith apart from Christ's righteousness?

th A Good Minister (1 Timothy 4:6-10) — We gravitate to titles that seem to elevate our importance or prestige. Are we learning the true dignity of fulfilling our call to have a servant's heart, whatever our role?

th Let And Set (1 Timothy 4:11-16) — Persons who exemplify purity in speech and action are truly an endangered species. The need for such is critical. Are we seriously aiming to be this kind of example?

th How To View Others (1 Timothy 5:1-16) — Healthy relationships mandate mutual respect. Are we diligent to see others as persons for whom Christ died? Do we respect God's prerogative in everyone's life?

th Time Will Tell (1 Timothy 5:17-25) — Are we deliberately keeping open the doors and windows of our lives, allowing the fresh air of truth and love to clear away hidden agendas and secret sins?

th Sound Words For Slaves (1 Timothy 6:1-5) — What is the real and basic commonality between masters and slaves, between any socio-differences, that should elicit mutual respect for one another?

th The Cost Of Riches (1 Timothy 6:6-10,17-19) — The love of money can be a costly addiction. Do we need to consider its corrosive effect in our lives, and the extended effect on our relationships with others?

th How To Fight (1 Timothy 6:11-16, 20-21) — The world has often fought unjust wars, often in the name of God. As we fight the good fight of faith, do we see God as the Life-Giver?

th Tears Of Love (2 Timothy 1:1-7) — Gifts of deep and caring friendships create cherished memories. As we think of our dear friends, are we faithfully engaging in prayer on their behalf?

th The Call To Courage (2 Timothy 1:8-13) — Self-sufficiency, and all other forms of pride, cause resistance to the gospel. After a self-exam, is this also the reason we lack courage to speak publicly of God's grace?

st How To Be Strong (2 Timothy 1:14-2:2) — Is God's grace available to strong or weak people? Why? Have we discovered the radical difference in the path and power of grace in a fallen world?

nd The Test Of Faith (2 Timothy 2:3-13) — Genuine faith is defined, as well as refined, by suffering. Do we stand up to temptation and ridicule as Christ's disciples, or do we compromise our faith?

rd God's Firm Foundation (2 Timothy 2:14-19) — Is not the greatest thanksgiving for our faith, that by grace allows us to be in Christ? Those who are genuine will depart from iniquity in gratitude for that amazing grace.

th Fit To Be Used (2 Timothy 2:20-26) — Every believer has a high calling to extend Christ's love unreservedly. This can only be fulfilled in the context of a cleansed life. Can we do this alone?

th Dangerous Times (2 Timothy 3:1-9) — Life on planet Earth is historically perilous, and our times are no exception. What is our prospectus for living as authentic disciples of Jesus in such a stressful world?

th The Secret Of The Divine Presence (2 Timothy 3:10-13) — Christians experience persecution for their faith. Others escape it by putting on a phony Christian front. Are we seeking guidance from the written and Living Word?

th Thinking Christianly (2 Timothy 3:14-17) — Thinking Christianly requires believing the Scriptures. How often do we study the Word of God to know our Lord and heed Him so that He can live His life through us?

th Preach The Word (2 Timothy 4:1-4) — The life-changing Gospel is the best of good news. Are we hoarding the Treasure, or ever alert to opportunities to share it with other sinners in need of grace?

th Looking Back (2 Timothy 4:5-8) — Finishing well is a worthy aim. Are we clearly defining the journey? Have we grasped the power available in Christ to regularly encounter obstacles and counteract evil?

th The Lion's Mouth (2 Timothy 4:9-22) — Is our faith and witness limited by dependency on others? Where is the real and unfailing source of power on which we can draw for confidence and safe-keeping?
