I memorized the twenty-third psalm when I was a small child, but I have never had an opportunity to study it in detail. It has been a wonderful experience for me this past week to look through this familiar psalm and to have the Lord speak to me again out of this passage. It is a great psalm, one I am sure you have turned to many times in periods of trial. It ministers to our deepest spiritual needs.

No Want  ( Psalm 23:1 )  Daily Devotion

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. (Psalm 23:1)

Where Needs Are Met  ( Psalm 23:2-3a )  Daily Devotion

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. (Psalm 23:2-3a)

    Guidance  ( Psalm 23:3b )  Daily Devotion

He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. (Psalm 23:3b)

The Hebrew word translated paths means a well-defined, well-worn trail. That indicates again how stupid sheep are, because even when the trail is well laid out, they still need a shepherd. They are still inclined to wander away, no matter how obvious the path may be. The shepherd knows the trails. He has been there before, and the sheep trust him.

Through The Valley  ( Psalm 23:4 )  Daily Devotion

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4)

Worship In The Wilderness  ( Psalm 23:5-6 )  Daily Devotion

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. (Psalm 23:5-6)
